I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to speak to a truly inspiring woman and I am so excited to share this inspiring interview with you now.
Let me introduce you to Helen Snape. Helen is a wonderful relationship coach and author who is making a real positive difference in so many lives. Helen is based in Surrey in the United Kingdom and works with clients online from all over the world, including Europe, America and India. Local clients are lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with her face to face too.

Ces: “Helen, thank you so much for agreeing to talk with me today. I’d like to ask you how were you inspired to start your business?”
Helen: “After burning out at work and losing myself in an abusive relationship, I recognised that I was suffering from the ‘disease to please’, I discovered the magic of boundaries and this has fueled my passion to help others do the same ever since.
We don’t get taught about healthy relationships or boundaries at school and so we simply absorb whatever we see growing up. The good news is that it is never too late to learn!
Therefore I wanted to find a way to share information and education through writing, speaking and social media, plus use somatic coaching and mindfulness to help clients develop the skills and confidence to advocate for themselves in their relationships at home and at work.”

Ces: “I love that you have found ways to reach out to and help others making good come from your own life experiences. How much do you love what you do?”
Helen: “It’s incredibly rewarding to know that the pain and trauma I have been through I can turn into something good and something that will make a positive difference to other people’s lives.
I love the process of gently nurturing another person’s growth. I believe that given the right conditions, we all strive towards our potential.”
Ces: “Yes! I agree – given the right support and encouragement we can achieve amazing things regardless of what we have experienced in life. If you could go back to a point in your life when you were facing a challenge, what inspirational advice would you give yourself?”
Helen: “When I left the abusive relationship I was at my lowest point. I didn’t know who I was, what I wanted and felt like I had messed up my life. I would love to be able to tell myself back then that life does get better and also to remember that I had overcome the biggest hurdle of leaving which proves I can do hard things.”

Ces: “Tell us how you inspire and helps your customers!”
Helen: “The first thing people often discover is my book ‘Drop the Fake Smile: the Recovering People-Pleaser’s Guide to Self-Love, Boundaries and Healthy Relationships’ and I think it helps them feel they are not alone in their struggles to say ‘no’ and find equal relationships. They can relate to the examples I give from my life and they gain some understanding of how their pattern of over-giving has developed. There are exercises in the book to help readers apply the learning into their own lives.
Through one-to-one or group coaching I help individuals grow their self-esteem, self-confidence, learn how to identify the boundaries they need, communicate them and hold onto them when challenged. Clients tell me it has improved intimate relationships, family relationships, their confidence at work and their health, through better self-care and mind-body awareness.”

Ces: “Now, tell us something you would love to manifest into your reality!”
Helen: “A cat! I grew up with cats and a dog and I miss having a pet in my life. Whilst it’s not currently possible, I am looking forward to the day I am able to invite a furry friend into my home again.”
Ces: “I totally relate to this – I grew up with a wonderful pet dog and would love the joy of a furry friend but it’s not the right time for me to have one in my life either. Knowing you aren’t alone in something and that there is light at the end of the tunnel means a lot. What is a typical problem someone you work with might be facing and how do you help guide them back into the light?”
Helen: “One problem I come across often is a difficulty making decisions. Often my clients have been valuing other people’s opinions and feelings above their own and they end up feeling overwhelmed, miserable and confused by differing opinions and feel unable to make the decision facing them.
I help them step back, slow down and tune into their own wisdom, intuition and feelings so they are clearer on their own position and able to own it. I help them see decision-making in a new way so they are no longer held back by the fear of ‘getting it wrong’.”

Ces: “As people we are always evolving and learning things on our life journey. What is something you have learnt that inspired you?”
Helen: “I remember reading in Susan Jeffers’ book ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’ that blaming others and blaming ourselves moves us away from power and towards pain. I had known that blaming others for my problems wasn’t helpful, but it blew me away to learn that blaming myself was equally unhelpful. I used to blame myself all the time! It began to open up a new and more compassionate inner dialogue.”

Ces: “Businesses are always evolving too… what are you inspired to do next?”
Helen: “I want to share education about boundaries, conflict management and healthy relationships with more young adults. I give talks to apprentices and college students and love seeing the difference my talks make on their understanding and confidence.
I also want to write a second book, that could serve as a daily dose of inspiration and comfort to fellow recovering people-pleasers everywhere.”

Ces: “How do you define success in life / living a fulfilled life?”
Helen: “To me, a fulfilled life is a life of purpose and expanding joy. That means getting clear on what you want in your life, what’s important to you and what makes you happy – rather than focusing on everyone else’s opinions or society’s expectations and demands.”
Ces: “Thank you so much with sharing this Helen – I recommend your book and am happy to add your contact details below for anyone reading this who wants to reach out to you!”
